Cocaine in frozen fish: 2 charged, remanded

Two relatives were on Monday charged and remanded to prison following the seizure of a large quantity of cocaine discovered in a cargo shipment of frozen fish at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, last week.

Safoor Ali, 27, and 22-year-old Nazeema Inraze who hail from the West Coast of Demerara (WCD) made their first court appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLenan in relation to the matter on Monday.

They were not required to plea to the charge and were remanded to prison until July 7.

Ali and Inraze were charged for attempting to traffic 20 pounds of the illegal substance which was concealed in frozen fish at the CJIA last Wednesday.

Initially, a large number of individuals were detained by law enforcement officials, but after some days of intense grilling and investigative work, members of the Police Narcotics Branch, the others were released and Ali and Inraze were charged.

INews understands that the consignment of frozen fish was destined for the United States of America.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said it is intensifying its efforts to clamp down on the scourge of drug trafficking.
