CJIA now issuing drivers’ permits to foreigners

Foreigners visiting Guyana will now benefit from the issuances of drivers’ permits which will allow them to operate vehicles in the country for specified periods. The Tourism Ministry, in collaboration with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), launched the service at Guyana’s main airport – the Cheddi Jagan International — on Thursday.

Issuance of the driver’s permit is free of charge; and will be valid for one month, but can be renewed if necessary. The foreigners will, however, only be allowed to drive a vehicle which was specified on their valid driver’s licence. That licence must be presented to airport officials in order to obtain the permit.

Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad said the process of collecting the permit in Guyana is hassle free.

The minister said that as a result of this initiative, it is expected that car rental services will join forces with the airport authorities, so visitors can have easy access to that service.

Importantly, Prashad noted that the issuance of the permit will be in operation 24 hours daily. “Once there are flights coming into the country, senior customs officers will be here, and they have the authority to issue, or other authorised designated ranks can issue (licences), and this 24-hour service is unique to this part of the hemisphere, we have gone ahead of our Caribbean brothers and sisters,” he explained.

Further, the minister said the service is also available at the Ogle International Airport, adding that the service will soon be implemented at Mole- son Creek, Corentyne.

In the meantime, Prashad noted, hotel owners, tour operators, the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana, foreign missions around the world, as well as the Caribbean Tourism Organisation have been informed of the new service.
