Citizens must reflect on the many achievements under Dr Cheddi Jagan’s leadership

The life of the founder leader of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/ C), Dr Cheddi Jagan will always be commemorated as is duly owed to him because of his fight for democracy in Guyana. This is according to President Donald Ramotar, who was at the time addressing the Annual Family Fun Day in honour of the life and work of the late president.
Ramotar, who addressed thousands of Guyanese from all walks of life on Sunday on the lawns of State House during the event, described Jagan as a one-of-a-kind individual who dedicated his life towards the fight for the country’s independence.
“He made a lot of sacrifice in the process, today what we have achieved and what we are doing could not have been possible without Dr Jagan and the past generation,” Ramotar stated.

The president said as Guyana celebrates the life of Jagan, citizens must also reflect on the many achievements that were acquired under the late president’s tenure, and noted that these accomplishments must not be taken for granted.
He recalled the struggle many years ago when citizens had to join lines to get the basic food supplies.
“Those days are gone and we have moved away from that time, those things are behind us and would never come again under the PPP/ C administration,” Ramotar assured.
Turning his attention to the current state of Parliament, Ramotar said Guyana is now witness to the reincarnation of the People’s National Congress of the 1970s and 1980s, when vindictiveness was its hallmark.
“What is taking place in Parliament are signs we must look at carefully,” Ramotar stressed.
He said Guyanese must now be worried to know the combined opposition is using their one-seat majority to hinder progress in the country.
“Most recently, during the last sitting of the National Assembly, the Firearms Amendment Bill was defeated… A bill that seeks to fight against crime and the entry of illegal weapons, the opposition voted against it on the grounds that they don’t like Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, blaming the July 18th killings in Linden on him,” Ramotar argued.
He said this clearly shows that the opposition parties, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) do not have any regard for democracy in the country, and stressed that for them, dictatorship seems to mean much more.
“Therefore, we must guard against those dark days which crippled the country and hindered development during the period when there was a dictatorship system in the country.”
President Ramotar said while Guyana commemorates Dr Jagan’s life, citizens need to remember that it is important to let their voices be heard on the injustices in society.
