Chutney Night sets stage for Jamzone Summer Break 2012

Dogged by a number of setbacks, this year’s Jamzone Summer Break got off to good start with the hosting of Chutney Night at the Guyana National Stadium on Saturday evening.

The more than 20 artistes who performed at the show delivered stirring acts to the admiration of fans, some dripping wet by the close of the event. From chutney vibes to soca, KI’s “Single Forever” was the song of the night.
While some bands performed as expected, some seem more recharged like never before. One such band was the Shakti Stings comprising Prince JP, Ameer Khan and Pooran, along with guitarist Avinash Roopchand.
The group performed for about 20 minutes and every moment was worth the while. The lead singer, Prince JP stepped up his game and with his great vocals, excellent stage performance and swaggy moves, even the Jamzone International Delegates were all on their feet having a ball.
Singing various hits, including “Mr Fete”, “Palance”, “Single Forever”, “JP is the only man she want”, among others, he definitely added some vibes to the evening.
Adding to the great performances was Rick Romotar, who is popularly known for his hit “Ah should a never ask she to marry me”, had the crowd going wild. His performance was nothing but to perfection with people gyrating to the vibes.
Romotar has made a name for himself in Guyana and has been living up to it as one of the most loved Trinidadian artistes.
Anant Hansraj, who is performing for the first time at Jamzone Chutney Night, also sang a few filmi and chutney songs, including a new hit that he recorded with the Guyanese Baboo, Terry Gajraj.
Speaking of the Guyanese Baboo, his performance as usual was spectacular. Like any other time, he had the crowd waving and swaying to his melodies. Belching out some folk songs and his very own “Oh Bangalee Baboo”, the audience went wild.
Gajraj was also honoured by the Hits and Jams Entertainment for his tremendous contribution to the music industry.
Other performers were Chris Garcia, Ashnee Singh, Haresh Singh, Fiona Singh, Kenrock and for the very first time in Guyana, the band, “2Famous”. The duo had it going on with their Spanish like tunes and swaggy moves.
The show stopper as expected was the Karma Band. Ravi B, Nesha B and others tore up the place, as fans nearly collapsed in excitement.
Dishing out several of their hits songs, there was not enough space for fans to get their grove on. Karma has always delivered and Guyanese fans of all race, creed and political affiliation have enjoyed their energetic performance.
“De Hunter”, who was recruited into the band to fill the absence of heart throb, Gregory, and as usual, he did not disappoint.
Meanwhile, the 10 of the 11 Jamzone delegates were seen getting their groves on to the chutney/ soca vibes. Some of them noted that while Guyana and their country have a lot in common, this was their first chutney experience in Guyana.
Miss Jamaica noted that in her country, it is more about reggae music, but she is now getting to love the chutney music.
On the other hand, Miss St Kitts and Nevis, posited that it is her first time attending a chutney show and she is amazed at the choice of words used by the chutney artistes.
Miss St Kitts thought that since she is here for the first time, she will steal the concept of a chutney concert and take it to her country.
Miss Trinidad, who is no stranger to chutney music, complements the artistes for a job well done, and more so, the organisers for pulling-off a successful first night of the Jamzone Summer Break 2012 activities.
With the success of this event, all eyes and minds are now on the Regional Night slated for August 24, and the International Night featuring international rapper Rick Ross on August 25.
