Chinese artists to capture Guyana’s biodiversity

Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony welcomed a delegation of artists from the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) at the National Cultural Centre on July11.

The group will capture Guyana’s unique biodiversity through art. The minister said that the eight artists, who will each draw five paintings, will do the sketches in Guyana and complete them in Beijing, China. This is the first time Guyana has had such a large Chinese delegation of artists.

Dr Anthony stated that next year will be the 40th anniversary of the friendship between Guyana and China; and to mark this event, the ministry will host an art exhibition in which the paintings will be showcased. The minister also stated that the exhibition will improve not only ties but people-to-people relationships, and it is a unique way to show what Guyana is doing with its rainforest.

The minister said the Culture Ministry and government are pleased to have the Chinese delegation, which will interact with local artists and discuss improving collaboration. Luo Qin, Vice President of the Friendship Art Exchange Association of CPAFFC, said that the delegation will have the opportunity to see a lot of Guyana’s scenery in preparation for the paintings.

“Guyana is the first English-speaking Caribbean country to establish ties with China… we cherish very much the friendship between our two peoples,” he said.

Assistant Director of Culture at the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry, Colonel Linden Ross, said the delegation of artists will leave Georgetown to visit Iwokrama on July 12. Others present at the meeting were Alfred King, Permanent Secretary of the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry; Friendship Art Association members Shi Jiangcheng, Ye Xingsheng, Wang Jiping, Tong Changxin, Luo Jiakuan, Liu Jianzhong; and CPAFFC Spanish Interpreter Hua Jiaguang.
