Cheddi Jagan memorial road race in Berbice this weekend

The East Berbice roadways will be a hive of activity of Sunday when the 19th annual Cheddi Jagan memorial road race is staged from 09:00h.

The 55-mile race, in memory of the founder of the People’s Progressive Party Civic and former president Cheddi Jagan, will pedal off in front of Freedon House at New Amsterdam, proceed to Number 55 Village before returning to Port Mourant for the finish.

The veteran, female, and mountain bike riders will turn at Hog Style on the upward journey and return to Port Mourant for the finish.

The first six finishers in the Open category, along with the top three juniors, veterans and mountain bikers, as well as the first Over-60 rider will be rewarded.

Last year’s winner was Orville Hinds, who clocked two hours, 38 minutes, 29.44 seconds (02h: 38m: 29.44s), followed by Alanzo Greaves, Raynauth Jeffrey, Robin Persaud, Hamzah Eastman and Raul Leal.

Raphael Leung, Andrew Hicks and Christopher Griffith were the leading three juniors, while Ozia McUally won the Mountain Bike race ahead of Julio Melville and Deeraj Garbarran, and Marica Dick outhustled Whitney Poyer and Toshawnna Doris in the female segment.

Walter Isaacs was the top Over-60 rider. Meanwhile, transportation for riders and officials will leave the Sport Ministry’s office on Main Street at 05:00h on Sunday.

The race is being sponsored jointly by several sport enthusiasts and organised by national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed. PPP/C General Secretary Clement Rohee is expected to drop the flag to send the riders on their way in front of Freedom House, New Amsterdam.
