Guyana’s bantamweight novice silver medalist, Delon Charles, will replace national amateur flyweight champion, Imran ’ Magic’ Khan, for this Friday’s segment of the 20th edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control Pro Am card set for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The confirmation came from Guyana Amateur Boxing Board (GABA) coordinator, Terrence Poole, by telephone yesterday.
Poole told Guyana Times Sport that Charles, who earned himself a silver medal at the Ronald Wilson Memorial Boxing tournament held in Barbados last December, will match gloves with three- time GBBC’s ProAm card winner Richard Williamson of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) in the bantamweight division on Friday night.
Charles, who trains at the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym in Albouystown, replaces Khan, after the lanky boxer suffered a setback in his promising career when he sustained a single stab wound to his left arm last Thursday.
Other fights carded for the amateur segment will see the young Joel Williamson, who also trains Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG), matching gloves with Travis Hubbard, who trains at the Harpy Eagles Gym in Albouystown, in the 95- 99 pounds category.
Other pugilists will be Harpy Eagles Gym’s Randolph Singh versus Young Achievers Quincy Gomes in a lightweight contest. Matthew Hollingsworth from the Five Star Boxing Gym will come up against Diwani Lampkin from the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym in a 100- 106 pound match- up.
The professional segment of the card will be captioned by Guyana’s welter weight champion Iwan ‘ Pur Gold’ Azore and Simeon ‘Candy Man’ Hardy for the vacant World Boxing Council’s (WBC) CABOFE welterweight title.
The undercard will also feature two welterweight fights with Jermaine King and Cecil Smith matching skills over four rounds, while Mitchell Rogers will take on Anthony Augustin in a four round heavyweight fight.
In a four-round catch-weight con test, Guyana’s middleweight champion Edmond DeClou will match gloves with James Walcott.
The monthly card is an initiative of the GBBC in collaboration with the Sports Ministry and the National Communication Network (NCN).
The bouts, previously broadcast live, will now be subject to a delayed broadcast while admission price remains at $ 1,000 for adults and $ 500 for children.
Several corporate entities have teamed up to ensure the success of the card, including Guyoil, Ansa Mcal, Singers and Digicel among others. Bell time is 20: 00h sharp.
