Celebrating 44 years in the nursing profession

Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Nursing Services, Assistant Director Noshella Lalckecharan last Friday celebrated 44 years in the nursing profession.
During an interview with the Guyanese media, Lalckecharan said, “I regret nothing about my career.” Lalckecharan started her career at the GPHC at age 21, while reading for her register nurse diploma programme in 1969.
Reflecting on her career from then to present, Lalckecharan said despite the challenges, she loves her job.
The veteran nurse said having spent 25 years working in the theatre; she could do it again, as she enjoyed working there more than any other department in the hospital.
“When I started to where I am now, the best part for me is that I graduated as a nurse midwife and working as a manager, but in my late stages, I graduated from university, that’s when I was in my 50s” The 65-year-old nurse, who serves in the capacity of an administrator, said she also provides other services outside of her work time, teaching young men and women pursuing careers in nursing.
“At the moment, I am a part-time clinical supervisor with the students. I do that off my regular working time, I give like three hours to the students so I still have my clinical knowledge. I am also engaged in the operating room technician programme and part facilitator in that programme… I like that field,” Lalckecharan said proudly.
Lalckecharan said the nursing profession though challenging, is also rewarding.
While nursing is not a highly paid profession, the nursing director believes that young nurses should aspire to serve their country, rather than migrate.
Lalckecharan is a registered nurse, trained in midwifery and also holds a bachelors of science degree in nursing from the University of Guyana.
She is the mother of two: one boy and a girl and has four grandchildren, the oldest being 14 and the youngest four years. The assistant director of nursing services plans to continue serving the GPHC and lecturing courses in nursing.
