Dear Editor, The GAWU an article appearing in the September 24 the Guyana Chronicle, Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan promising workers in the public sector a pay rise this year. The Chronicle quoted Minister Jordan as saying “public servants will get a salary increase this year and a bigger increase in 2020…”. For the beleaguered public servants hardpressed by the circumstances of contemporary life in Guyana, the promised increase must have been welcome news. How much the increase will be able to alleviate the difficulties of life that public servants…

Jagdeo has relentlessly exposed the corruption and gross ineptitude in the Coalition Govt
Dear Editor, “Statesman par excellence” and “a matchless leader of the Guyanese people” are just some of the many complimentary remarks made by both the local and the international communities and people of all races, even those who are his political opponents. Recently, on social media, a strong supporter of the coalition referred to him as a true leader. By now you know whom I am referring to – Dr Bharrat Jagdeo! Since he took up the mantle of the Leader of the Opposition, he has relentlessly exposed the massive…
Read MoreGranger using strongman politics to trample on the rights of Guyanese
Dear Editor, The world recently witnessed how Mr David Granger unpatriotically pushed Guyana into a constitutional crisis when he used strongman politics to disrespect and deny the constitutional rights of Guyanese. In keeping with his strongman attitude, he refused to call elections within the constitutional timeframe required by the successful passage of the No-Confidence Motion on December 21, 2018. Mr Granger’s behaviour does not surprise us at all. He is addicted to bullying others. This is exactly how the PNC operates. We can all remember how we were forced to…
Read MoreAll stakeholders should work towards peaceful and credible elections in Guyana
Dear Editor, I have full confidence that a date for the upcoming elections will be released soon and a return to calm will ensue. There is no need for anyone to be portrayed as uncivilised or uncouth and less need for aggression and revenge. We must avoid the potential for violence and the insulting of each other. We the people of Guyana are all looking for a transparent and trustworthy election process free of violence, disorder and corruption. Once a date is provided, which will be soon, the key issue…
Read MoreMoses has forgotten all about those virtues and great ideals he learnt from Cheddi Jagan
Dear Editor, For the first time in many years, I felt like I wanted to puke. So what could have brought on this sudden feeling of nausea and outrage? Well, I made the mistake of listening to Moses Nagamootoo, the usurper Prime Minister, as he was being interviewed on the NCN programme, InSight, last Wednesday, September 18. Now, this is the same man who, while campaigning in Whim, Berbice, on April 2, 2015, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k013CAcuJbk) tried to convince his supporters of his virtues by claiming he was the first Minister to…
Read MoreGECOM Chair should explain why the sudden change in elections timeline
Dear Editor, It is refreshing to finally read the joint statement issued by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, which unequivocally denounced Guyana’s illegal Government for being “in breach of the Constitution following its failure to adhere to the decisions of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on June 18 and its subsequent orders.” Kindly permit two comments. First, the de facto President, arguably, admitted to having “breached” the Constitution. On one hand, he rejected the tripartite joint statement and stated: “My only response is that…

Dear Editor, Guyana’s oil discoveries have set insider trading alarm bells ringing at all the major stock exchanges in the past week. On September 8, a report by online magazine Petroleum Economist attributed new discoveries to Government of Guyana official, Owen Verwey. “There have been some big discoveries and by next Friday, we will be announcing another one… We are one of the hottest destinations for the oil and gas industry right now and that is set to continue,” this statement was made during an address at the Society of…

Read MoreGranger should call elections and face the consequences
Dear Editor, As we very slowly but surely approach this much anticipated and unique general and regional election, something is strikingly odd. Where is the APNU/AFC? We are in election mode and the contemporary PPP Administration is very up-to-date with information. There are interviews and press conferences very regularly on TV. They are also releasing these interviews moments after airing on YouTube and on other popular social medial platforms. I am not the biggest fan of social media, but it is the way of the world now especially for young…
Read MoreStiffer penalties needed in Guyana for sex offenders
Dear Editor, It breaks my heart to know that paedophilia, trafficking and other child sex offences have become a scourge and industry in Guyana and around the world. In Guyana, we have seen many instances where mothers are prostituting their own underage children, where fathers are sexually molesting their own daughters, and in some cases, even their own sons. I recall a case, in the Vreed-en-Hoop area, where a Corporal from the Guyana Defence Force, molested his two-year-old stepson. Some stepfathers are also known to take advantage of their stepchildren.…
