Dear Editor, In recognising the intensification of a variety of threats to peace posed by the political tensions that surround the current election campaigns, the Universal Peace Federation – Guyana, wishes to condemn the political rhetoric that is causing great confusion, annoyance, distrust and humiliation within the minds and hearts of the citizens of Guyana. These unnecessary pains, which are obviously acting up on the emotionalism of some of our peoples, could turn riotous. We have recently seen tensions in Laing Avenue, Sophia and certain parts of Region Five. It…

State media should not be used for political propaganda purposes
Dear Editor, In responding to both Tony Vieira and myself on the subject of broadcast coverage of the political parties contesting the elections, Mr Enrico Woolford has indulged in ad hominem attacks on Vieira and myself, attacking the messenger rather than the message. I suppose that this will impress the party faithful but it does not address the issue at hand. Tony Vieira, Kit Nascimento and Enrico Woolford are not the issues. The issue is that both of the State-owned and operated media, the National Communications Network (NCN) and the…
Read MoreMuch at stake in the upcoming polls
Dear Editor, I write to urge caution amidst the heightened passions and hollow promises which so often characterise Guyanese elections. This election is perhaps the most monumental in the whole of Guyanese history, for it comes at the same time when our oil industry is taking off. The wealth at stake, and the power of good or evil it will provide those who wield it, will surely set the tone for Guyana’s future. It is vitally important that the Government keeps those revenues flowing. It seems to be fashionable of…
Read MoreAPNU/AFC list is dominated by the same people who have squandered the country’s reserves
Dear Editor, It is an honour to be selected as a candidate for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic for the upcoming General and Regional Elections. Over the course of the last eighteen months, I have had the pleasure to work with many of the fellow candidates and work it has been as we have struggled with the obduracy of the Granger Administration. At 52, I am one of the older members of the list, which augurs well for Guyana’s future; the destiny of our country should be driven by youth guided…
Read MoreGranger unfit and unsuitable to lead Guyana ever again
Dear Editor, There is certainly a buzz around the phrase, “decade of development”. What is a “decade of development” from a Guyanese perspective and who can best launch it? To answer these questions, one has to look at the concept of what it does to free a nation from the shackle of racial, ethnic and religious oppression using an attitude of mind that sets a specific tone. How about a Guyana that uses its natural resources and wealth to lift all boats (in this case our people) economically, socially and…
Read MoreGuyana’s election results must be respected
Dear Editor, I started a paper on political stability and development that I need to complete. It will be the first study to examine the nexus between political stability and economic growth in the Caribbean. Using data for the period 1960-2018 and Generalized Auto Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models, I found convincing evidence that political stability is negatively related to economic growth. My findings would appear to defy rational thinking since it means that when the economy performs poorly, the country enjoys relatively more peace and political stability. In civilised…
Read MoreHow will Guyanese remember 2019
Any future historical reference to 2019 would reveal, among other things, that it was a year of uncertainties. That’s in the context of the various attempts to nullify the unprecedented passage of a no-confidence motion (NCM) voted on at the end of the previous year. Many are convinced that “disregard” seems more apt to describe the year due to the actions of the APNU/AFC Government in its seeming quest to avoid the constitutionally-mandated processes following the NCM. For the purpose of a reminder, the Constitution unambiguously states that elections must…
Read MoreHow can the Coalition dare to ask Guyanese to vote for them again?
Dear Editor, Hopefully, we will be having General and Regional Elections in a little over 2 months but during this time we will be bombarded once again with parties indulging in skillful marketing of their manifestos and in some cases the selling of not only illusive dreams but also manipulating the masses through outright lies and deceptions. Immediately the APNU/AFC Coalition comes to mind! We have witnessed that during the last 2015 Elections the APNU/AFC Coalition made numerous promises and bold statements of what it can achieve within 100 days…
Read MoreAPNU/AFC must come clean on the numerous allegations of corruption since 2015
Dear Editor, President David Granger resurrected the constitutionally dead (since September 18, 2019) National Assembly, and dissolved it. How can the dead Assembly be dissolved? This is another move to claim constitutional legitimacy, notwithstanding the blatant violation of the Constitution, and the rule of law by this caretaker Granger Government. The incumbent APNU/AFC Government came into office since 2015 with a promise of the good life, and to do better than its predecessor, the PPP/C, and to wipe out what it claimed to be much corruption under that regime. The…
Read MoreNo need to sell Guyana’s share of profit oil directly
Dear Editor, The response by the Department of Energy to grave concerns expressed about the invitation to select petroleum companies to Guyana for face-to-face meetings is disingenuous. There is no need to sell Guyana’s share of profit oil directly. The share should be sold by the operator and should fetch the same price as the operator’s share. The price garnered for ExxonMobil’s share will be declared publicly to its shareholders and is a transparent, trusted and audited process. ExxonMobil cannot and will not lie to its owners (shareholders) and is…
