Cane cutter fatally struck down while crossing road

A 39-year-old Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice (WCB) man lost his life following an accident on the Bath Settlement Public Road.
Dead is Laikram Ninesingh, of 175 Block D Bath Settlement. He was killed about 18:30h on Old Year’s Day by a minibus.

Eyewitnesses say the man was crossing the road when he was hit and he died on the spot.
According to reports, minibus BVV 2961, driven by a 25-year-old resident of Belladrum Village, WCB, was proceeding west along the Public Road reportedly very fast when Ninesingh, who was alleged to have suddenly begun crossing the road, ended up in the path of the vehicle and was struck down.
The injured man was picked up and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the dead man’s mother, Rapam Kumiri, there were many persons on the road at the time of the accident.
She explained that there was a barbecue not far away and the area was crowded. The bus, she noted, was at the time travelling at a fast rate.
Singh, a father of one, worked as a cane harvester and during the out-of-crop season, he worked as a security guard.
He had been performing security duties for the past three months at a site a short distance from where the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, the bus driver has been taken into custody and is assisting with the investigation. Police have since released the bus to its owner.
