Canada-based heart surgeon in Guyana

Dr Kishan Narine

Internationally-renowned Guyanese-born surgeon Dr Kishan Narine is currently visiting Guyana on an outreach of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (CGAGS) with support from the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta.

While in Guyana, Dr Narine will be participating in the training of Guyanese residents in a CGAGS partnership with the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

At the same time, he will be visiting both the GPHC and Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) located in the GPHC compound with a view to exploring initiatives to further improve all aspects of cardiac care in Guyana.

The doctor, who originally hails from Port Mourant, Berbice, is an internationally-recognised expert in heart failure and heart valve surgery, and has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications.

His clinical focus is adult cardiac surgery; with additional sub-specialisation in heart transplantation, artificial hearts, mechanical circulatory support devices, and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

Dr Narine holds a BSc in Biochemistry (McGill University), MD (University of Leuven), Ph.D (University of Ghent), Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery (College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta) and the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta (LCIA) is an overarching institute coordinating all cardiovascular science research, education and patient care within both Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone, and the University of Calgary and serves a population of over 1.9 million people in Southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Eastern British Columbia.

Dr Narine, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Associate Professor at the Libin Institute, previously held the position of Adjunct Clinical Head, Cardiac Surgery and Surgical Co-director of Heart Transplantation at the University of Ghent.
