Canada-based Guyanese busted with cocaine in curry powder

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Christmas Day intercepted a 64-year-old Canadian-based Guyanese with three kilograms of cocaine stashed in custard and curry powder during a routine search at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
The elderly woman was about to board a BW 606 Caribbean Airlines flight to Canada when she was intercepted by CANU ranks.
A CANU official told Guyana Times International that the woman was checked by a process referred to as “profiling” and while being interrogated, the ranks realised that something was wrong, hence, they decided to search the woman’s suitcases. The official explained that the suitcases were searched in the presence of the woman and strange objects were detected in the custard and curry powder packages. The objects were extracted from the powder which proved to be the illegal substance.
The woman was told of the offence and was taken into custody. She reportedly told CANU ranks that she gave her suitcase to a male, who indicated to her that he wanted to send some things for his relatives.
After placing the stuff into the suitcase, it was returned to her. The woman is claiming that the man might have placed the cocaine into the suitcase. This story was not bought by the ranks.
Investigations by CANU ranks proved that the woman entered Guyana on December 15, and stayed by relatives who were surprised to see her. Based on information received, the woman is not employed in Canada and it is believed that she was “cash strapped”, and as such, was given the opportunity to make some money. She is expected to make a court appearance on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
