Born on April 12, 1990 in the ‘Ancient County’ of Berbice, chutney singer Bunty Singh is optimistic of winning the 2011 Chutney Competition, slated for February 19 at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground in Essequibo. This talented singer started his career when he was 17 years old with the singing of old Indian songs. He then “graduated” to singing bhajans, and finally had the urge to try out chutney.

At seven months old, Singh was adopted by Mr Saga of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice since, because of poverty, his biological parents had found it difficult to maintain six children and themselves. He is fortunate to have brothers and sisters from his biological parents and from his foster parents.

From an early age he was exposed to tassa drumming and harmonium playing. Moreover, he was engaged in many activities in and out of church, which has led to the type of life he lives today. He is happily married to Classical Dancer Yashwanie Bharran, who is attached to the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha.

In an exclusive interview with Guyana Times Entertainment, Singh disclosed that this is the second time that he will be participating in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport’s Chutney Competition. On the last occasion, he did not place but was adjudged the most promising artiste.

This, he noted, gave him the urge to put more effort into his singing and try to reach the top. He described himself as a humble, cool and interesting person who is willing to learn, since learning has no age limit. He also disclosed that his living in the Ancient County does not add or take away from everyday living.

Singh has released three of his thirty-three songs: “I drinking whole day in the bar”, “Oh Valarie” and “Tell Meh”, which he has written. They are available at Matt’s Record Bar. The lyrics for his songs were composed by Shakti Strings band. He is encouraging the relevant authorities to put copyright laws in place to protect artistes’ songs from hitting the market without their permission.

This year, he intends to mount a strong challenge in the Chutney Competition with his song titled “I like the way how”. This song was composed by the legendary Celia Samaroo. With this song he thinks he has a chance of copping the title. Even though, the competition will be held in Region Two, Singh is calling on all Essequibians to turn out in their numbers and support the competitors.

“Win or not, I am happy that I would have been a part of the event, one that would have given me more experience and the urge to move on and perform”, Singh noted. He encouraged youths to reach for their dreams and not lose focus on what they really want to achieve in life.
