Bringing artistic gourmet taste to Guyanese

‘There’s an artist in each of us’ says local chocolatier

Local chocolatier and owner of Reminiscence, Indra Mekdeci has introduced a new, creative and artistic twist to fruits and chocolate. Her artistry is seen in her carefully designed and flawlessly arranged bouquets and baskets of chocolate covered fruits.
In an interview with Guyana Times International, Indra said she has always been an advocate of living a healthy lifestyle by eating fruits and vegetables. Her young company, Reminiscence, creates delicious, high quality, artistically designed edible fruit bouquets and gifts that are practical and healthy.

Conceptualized and founded in December 2011, the entrepreneur said her business has been on a steady rise as persons are amazed at her artistic ability and creativity. Her aim is to bring people together across the miles by allowing friends and family overseas to add joy to any occasion by gifting her healthy, beautiful creations to loved ones in Guyana.
The chocolatier, who makes her own chocolate truffles from scratch, mentioned that she purchases fresh fruits daily, and takes pride in using only the highest quality local fruits, Belgian chocolates and premium imported strawberries.
“I strongly believe in healthy living, creativity and innovation. I think in each of us there is an artist; we just need time and effort to explore it. Last year, I had a back injury and was placed on bed rest. I used this time to do a lot of research online and came across an American company which is popularly known for their artistic fruit baskets and bouquets. This sparked the idea of my company,” Indra revealed.
Crediting her mother-in-law, who is into crafts, for teaching her a few artistic techniques, Indra noted that with the support of her family she was able to launch her company. After much practice in designing fruits using chocolate, she pointed out she hardly makes any mistakes or has to redo any of her edible projects.
“I currently do all the designs by myself, and get inspiration from my research. Initially, it took me about two hours to put together one arrangement, but now I’m faster. It is time consuming to decorate each strawberry, leave in the fridge to set, and then assemble them in an arrangement to make them look just right, but I enjoy every moment when I look at the end results and see what I have created.”
She added, “I launched with six items only, but now I have added a few more items in order to offer a variety. It is a bit more challenging but I really like what I’m doing. I’m excited to have brought this new aspect to gift giving in Guyana. It’s a whole new and different approach to what we can give as gifts.”

Operating from her home kitchen, Indra creates her chocolate fruit bouquets and baskets in her comfort zone, which lends greatly to making her more artistic. Concerning kitchen disasters, she noted that those usually happen during delivery, and encourages her clients to handle the arrangements carefully.
“I ensure the bouquets and baskets are properly packaged, but it’s left up to the customer to take great care when handling them. I now have my website, which links me with the international market, and I am very hopeful that this business will be successful. So far the response has been great,” she expressed.
Although encountering numerous challenges with other business ventures, Indra was determined to brush off and keep going. “I have always maintained, since I was very young, that it is important to go after your dreams. For me failure is no excuse to quit. Life goes on; if something doesn’t work out you just got to move on,” she encouraged.
