Brilliant Persaud regains Guyana Open title

– Sukhram maintains dominance in Female category

A perfect chip on the last hole by Avinash Persaud was the defining moment of the tournament as he regained the Guyana Open title on Sunday at the Lusignan Golf Course, East Coast Demerara.
His fellow villager, Christine Sukhram of Lusignan, bounced back on the final day to win the female title for a record sixth time in a row. On a competitive last day in the men’s championship flight, which featured players in the 0-9 handicap, Persaud played arguably the shot of the day to clinch top honours.
Coming into the final hole, the championship was wide open with Persaud, Canada-based Guyanese Roger Rajkumar and Kassim Khan all in contention for the prestigious title. However, Persaud, now a four-time Guyana Open winner, single-handedly dictated the outcome with a shot of expert precision, much to the delight of his supporters and agony of his rivals.
He finished with gross 155, while Rajkumar and Khan ended closely behind on 156 and 157 respectively.
Defending champion, Papo Haniff, who shared the lead with Persaud at the end of day one, faltered on the final day, losing out on a top three spot.
Meanwhile, Sukhram, who was trailing Suriname’s Nam Sook Choi at the end of the first day in the 0-36 handicap, rebounded in fantastic fashion, by notching up a gross of 160 and net 138. Sook Choi had to settle for second with gross 176 and net 148, while her compatriot, M.J Kim, copped third with gross 191 and net 151.
Both Persaud and Sukhram were presented with the winner’s jacket. The Men’s B Flight (10-18 handicap) was won by Roy Cummings with gross 165, while Seupaul Suknanan and Colin Ming finished in second and third respectively, both with gross 167.
Maurice Solomon emerged champion of the C Flight (19-28 handicap) with gross 185. Esau Shamshudin took the runner-up spot with gross 192, while Brij Bisessar finished third with gross 194.
The tournament was sponsored exclusively by Banks DIH Limited under its XM brand of aged rums. All the competitors were presented with special tokens, compliments of the beverage company.
