A 41-year-old Corentyne fisherman and his 17-year-old worker have been found dead and their boat missing following a fishing expedition on Saturday. Dead are Pooran Mathoor called “Sham” of Cromarty farm, Corentyne.

Relatives said his body as well as Fernando Singh’s bore wounds. Mathoor’s body washed up on the Adventure, Corentyne foreshore on Monday, while that of Singh was found late Tuesday afternoon at Tain foreshore. The two had left on a routine fishing trip on January 7, and were expected to return the following day.

At the home of Mathoor, there were many relatives and friends who had showed up to console his reputed wife and her three children.

Speaking to Guyana Times International, his weeping wife, Sabitree Singh disclosed that her husband left for sea with the falling tide around 14:00h on Saturday (January 7) with his employee, Fernando Singh called “Rakesh”. She said it was routine for them to return around 03:00h the following day (Sunday) at the Eversham Koker, from where they usually headed to the Port Mourant market.

However, Mathoor and Singh never showed up. At the home of the teenager at Lot 90 Bushlot Village, the scene was the same with the bottom house filled with relatives and friends bearing looks of grave concern on their faces. The mother of the missing boy, Kalawattie Singh, told this publication that her son has been working with Mathoor for the past six months after he dropped out of school and took to farming to help support his four siblings.

The boy turned to fishing to earn a living to support her as she is employed as a “domestic worker”; the children’s father had abandoned the family about six years ago, creating a deep financial gap to fill. His siblings are still in school and the boy was forced to drop out after Grade Eight, while his eldest brother Vikesh, is a trainee mechanic.

The mother of the teen had revealed that there was no hope of her son being found alive because of the circumstances.

“Me know me son dead cause only two a wok pun de boat and de boss man dead and boat na find.” The woman stated that she spoke with her son round 16: 00h on Saturday then again 07:30h on Sunday on Mathoor’s cell phone. She tried calling again around 10:00h on Sunday, but there was no response. Later that day, the mother of the teen said the wife of Mathoor called registering her concerns that something may have happened. After making checks at locations where fishers normally gathered and did not find them, the mother of the boy and Mathoor’s wife headed to the Whim Police Station to lodge a report.

This was around 18:30h on Monday, and while reporting the two persons missing, it was explained to this publication that three ranks returned to the station at the same time, stating that they had just picked up a corpse at the Adventure shore and transported it to Ramoo’s Funeral Parlor at Rose Hall Town.

Sabitree Singh said after looking at the corpse, she realised it was her husband. According to the woman, she recognised the red and white T-shirt, black denim pants and black and white underwear as those Mathoor wore last Saturday.

Other relatives who saw the corpse said the same thing.

A 16-year-old son of Mathoor, Kishan, disclosed that he recognised the corpse as his father’s as well as signs of wounds on his swollen face, eyes and a cut on the right hand near to the fingers. Late Tuesday, a search crew found Singh’s body on the Tain foreshore.

There has been no sign of the 28 feet wooden blue and red vessel on which an eight horse power Yamaha was attached.
