BK International, Maxie Williams to create a “tropical storm” at Mash 2011

Construction time! Models pose with some of the costumes to be worn by revellers of BK International mash band

BK International has teamed up with Guyanese designer Maxie Williams to create a “storm” and cultural blast on the streets of Georgetown at next week’s Mashramani festivities.

At a mini-launching ceremony of the costumes, Williams said that he came up with the concepts very easily. He explained that the costumes seek to pay homage to Guyana’s pristine rainforests and beautiful flora and fauna. The theme of the costumes is “out of the forests”.

The designer said he is committed to ensuring that Guyanese are well decorated when taking to the streets to celebrate Mashramani. “My costumes are all grounded in Guyanese culture, traditions, and pay respect to everything Guyanese”, Williams disclosed. He said he was proud to be collaborating with BK International to ensure that his vision of having his own Mash Band becomes a reality.

Williams is convinced that the band will attract significant support from a wide cross section of Guyanese; moreso models, youth and women. He advised that costumes can also be custom-made for plus-size models and senior citizens. The BK and Maxie Williams Mash Band will feature a total of nine sections, and more than 100 persons are expected to be part of the band, but there is room for another 100 or thereabouts.

The costumes boast hot reds, greens, blues, mauves and golds as the main colours. They also feature very distinct aspects of the way of life of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples. Some of the sections also see costumes being designed with the use of rare feathers and local materials.

Officials from BK International, while speaking with Guyana Times International, explained that they are very satisfied with the quality of the costumes and the designer, as portrayed at the launch. They said that BK was proud to be associated with Mashramani year after year, because it is a festival which seeks to build the patriotism of all Guyanese while unifying them.

The launching ceremony saw petite females and well marked males and females displaying flexibility, style, glamour and grace while depicting the various costumes; and from the look of things, the models are also very happy with the costumes.
