Biker on Gy$1M bail for three-year-old’s death

Fitzroy Abrams of Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara was on Tuesday granted Gy$ 1 million bail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus after he was charged for causing the death of three-year-old Saleena Shakieal of Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara.
The child met her demise last Friday evening on the Windsor Forest Public Road after she was struck by Abrams when he reportedly lost control of his motorcycle.

At the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, he was charged with several offences, with the most important being that of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was not required to plead to the charge which stated that on March 15 at Windsor Forest Public Road, he drove his vehicle in a dangerous manner to the public, resulting in the death of Saleena Shakieal. The other charges included unlicensed driver, driving an uninsured vehicle and failing to render assistance. He pleaded guilty to later charges and was fined, Gy$ 40,000, Gy$ 50,000 and Gy$ 30,000 respectively.
He will make another court appearance on April 23.
Shakieal, of 180 Sixth Street, Windsor Forest, succumbed to her injuries later that evening while receiving medical attention at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. She had sustained severe injuries about her body, including broken arms and legs.
A post-mortem performed on the remains of the toddler gave her cause of death as heamorrhage due to multiple injuries. It was reported that Abrams fled the scene, but turned himself in the following day accompanied by an attorney.
According to Yashwantie Kallap, she was purchasing groceries from a mobile unit with her two daughters when the tragedy occurred.
She had told this newspaper that while on the road, she heard the motorcycle coming from a distance, but continued to do her shopping.
As the motorcycle got closer, the rider’s brother attempted to stop him, but he flew past him and crashed into her and her daughter.
Her now dead daughter was found under the mobile grocery shop. Kallap and Shakieal were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where the toddler subsequently died. The child is survived by her parents and two sisters. Shakieal was laid to rest on Tuesday.
