Javon Crystal Wilson was crowned Miss Jamzone 2011 when the curtains came down on the pageant staged at the National Cultural Centre on Thursday night, May 26. She also walked away with the major prizes.
Wilson, who hails from New Amsterdam, Berbice, was one of the crowd’s favourites from the very first moment she took to the stage. Her warm personality and intelligence shone during every segment of the competition.
Wilson, who has an associate degree in tourism and lots of experience on the local and regional pageant scene, will now represent Guyana at the Miss Jamzone International pageant, which is slated for the latter part of this year, and the Miss Jaycees Pageant 2011, which kicks off in July. She will also be receiving more than Gy$3 million in cash and prizes.
Guyana will be up against at least seven other countries when these two regional pageants are staged, and Wilson will have to work very hard to ensure she walks away with the respective crowns.
Wilson copped the prizes for Best Talent, Best Evening Gown, and Miss Congeniality. The hundreds of persons who turned out to witness the pageant at the NCC are still talking about her talent piece, which was dubbed “Guyana tourism product and experience”.
Wilson, speaking with Guyana Times International minutes after being crowned queen, said that she was confident throughout the competition, and dedicated lots of her energy and time towards ensuring that she excelled at whatever tasks she was given. “I want to focus on the upcoming competitions now, and doing my country proud. I believe that Guyana has a lot to offer with respect to tourism, and no doubt is probably the best tourism destination in the region,” Wilson said confidently.
Wilson was sponsored by Fusion Sound Company. She expressed her gratitude to her family and all the other persons who gave her support and encouragement, as well as assistance while she competed for the Jamzone title. She believes that the title holder should be knowledgeable about the transformative potential of the various types of tourism products which can be found in Guyana.
This was exemplified by her answer to the final question, which was: “Legend has it that a man landed on the moon, hence the term “the man on the moon”. If the man on the moon landed in your backyard, what would you do to entertain him?”
Wilson said that apart from giving him a taste of Guyanese cuisine, she would also entice him with several cultural performances and displays that would depict the diversity of the Guyanese people as well as their hospitality. She said she would also ensure that he is fully entertained by taking him on several tours across the country.
The first runner-up, the spicy Janella Lewis, could have walked away with the crown had it not been for Wilson’s confident answer, as she, Lewis, submitted a good response to the final question. She said that she would have hoped that the ‘man on the moon’ landed during Jamzone time, so that he could get a good taste of tourism and hospitality at its best.
