Berbice woman jailed, fined for narco trafficking

The woman who was nabbed with 9.5kg of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) will be spending the next three years behind bars after she was jailed on Wednesday.

Tricia Elizabeth Loo, of 651 Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice, was jailed and fined by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The 44-year-old woman admitted that on September 20, 2016, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, she had in her possession 9.5kg of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. In addition to the three-year jail sentence, she was also fined G$25.6 million.

On the day of the incident, the businesswoman was to board a flight for New York when she was questioned by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks. An examination of her suitcase revealed the illicit substance, which was concealed in false walls of the suitcases that she was carrying.

She was arrested and subsequently charged with the offence.
