The tournament would be open to cricketers born on or after September 1 , 1996; and all clubs in Berbice are asked to get in contact with the Berbice Cricket Board to register as early as possible, or call 333- 2375 for more information. The Under-17 tournament would also pay tribute to the memory of the late Leslie Amsterdam for his contributions to Berbice cricket. The expected 50 teams would be divided into six sub-groups. At the end of the tournament, an Elite Squad of eighteen players will be selected for further training. Berbice Cricket Board treasurer Anil Beharry and president Keith Foster hailed the tournament as another milestone in the ongoing massive development of the game, and both expressed concern that there might be too much cricket being played in the Ancient County. They, however, urged the young cricketers to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them.

Mr Roy Jaferally, representative of the sponsor, expressed his company’s delight to be associated with the Berbice Cricket Board. He described the board as a symbol of brotherhood, vision and progress. He had special praise for the work that the Foster brothers are doing to raise the level of cricket in Berbice, and said that they brought RHTYSC magic to the BCB. He wished the Berbice Cricket Board a successful Under-17 Inter-club tournament, and pledged his company’s co-operation in the future to make it an annual tournament.

Teams across Berbice are encouraged to start preparing for the tournament, which would start shortly. The sponsorship cheque of Gy$200,000 was handed over to the board’s treasurer.
