Spinners lead Lower Corentyne to title.
Inspired by spin twins Gudakesh Motie- Kanhai and Shawn Perreira, Lower Corentyne defeated New Amsterdam/ Canje by 57 runs to lift the 2010 Republic Bank Under- 17 Inter- zone trophy. The Berbice Cricket Board ( BCB) organised two- day final was played at the Albion Community Centre ground last weekend.
Upon winning the toss, Lower Corentyne batted first and posted 157 from 55 of the allotted 60 overs.
Shailendra Shameer topscored with 48 ( 5x4s, 1×6), while opener Kandasammy Surujnarine made 30. Off- spinner Kevin Ramdeen grabbed 5- 65 from 19 overs, while Andel De Jonge and Totaram Sooknanan supported with 2- 22 and 2- 15 respectively.
In reply, NA/ Canje slipped to 33- 3 and never recovered. They were eventually dismissed for 109 with opener Romario De Jonge topscoring with 43 ( 5x4s). Sooknanan made 25 as Motie- Kanhai nabbed 4- 19 from 14.1 overs and Perreira picked up 4- 37 from 16 overs.
With a lead of 48 on first innings, Lower Corentyne needed only a draw to claim the title, but made a sporting declaration at tea on the second day at 133- 5. Veerapen Permaul led the way with 43, while Surujnarine and Sachin Dhaniram chipped in with 40 and 20 respectively.
Ramdeen completed a fine match with the ball as he bagged 3- 40 for a match- haul of 8- 105.
Faced with a target of 182 from 33 overs, NA/ Canje collapsed from a healthy 117- 5 to 125 all out with 30 minutes of play still available.
Shimron Hetmyer made 30 and De Jonge 22 and Motie- Kanhai claimed 5- 23 from 10 oveas and Perreira nabbed 3- 37.
At the Port Mourant ground, West Berbice and Upper Corentyne clashed in a 50- over match to decide the third place winner, National Under- 15 player Parmanand Narine was in brilliant form, striking a superb 150 ( 20x4s) to lead Upper Corentyne to a crushing 222- run victory over West Berbice.
Narine and Akeem Bowling ( 59) added 190 for the third wicket as Upper Corentyne amassed a huge 290- 6 in their allotted overs. Kurd Griffith was the only West Berbice bowler to escape the punishment and took career- best bowling fig ures of 6- 36 from nine overs.
In reply, West Berbice were dismissed for 68 in 21 overs with K. Kelsey ( 16) and Ramesh Ridwaan ( 19) being the only bowlers to reach double- figures. Bowling for Upper Corentyne, mediumpacer Trevor Thomas took 3- 15, Bisham Deolall 3- 10, and Shazam Rash 3- 15.
Lower Corentyne received the winner’s trophy and $ 50,000, while the three other teams in the tournament also received cash prizes.
