BCB launches 2011 Charity Programme

–  donates $ 130,000 to Alpha Children’s Home

The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) commenced its 2011 Charity Programme with a donation of Gy$130,000 worth of clothing and sports gear to the Alpha Children’s Home. The presentation also launched the Berbice Cricket Board’s calendar of activities for the year, during which the board has set itself a target of at least 15 cricket tournaments and 75 off-the-field projects.

Chairman of the BCB’s Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster, in making the presentation, stated that the board has transformed itself into a progressive NGO with the main aim of touching the lives of the less fortunate, while at the same time fulfilling its responsibilities to cricket.

During the year, the board will be involved in a total of twenty programmes directed towards children and the elderly at a cost of Gy$1.5 million. Among the other projects to be undertaken are donations to senior citizens’ homes, kits to newborn babies at the New Amsterdam Hospital, hampers for senior citizens, the Berbice Senior Players Charity Programme, a programme to feed the poor, and donations to NGOs in Berbice. All Berbice inter-county cricket teams will also be mandated to be involved in one charity project, as part of their personal development programmes.

Foster disclosed that, in 2011, the Special Events Committee will be involved in 20 charity programmes, 10 in education, 30 cricketing programmes, and 15 awards ceremonies, social events and the honouring of heroes.

Representative of the Alpha Children’s Home, Esther Bruyning, expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board for the donation, and hailed the board as a role model organisation which others should work hard to emulate. She noted that the Berbice Cricket Board had assisted the home in the past, and she assured the board members that the donation will be used for its intended purpose.

The Berbice Cricket Board would like to express gratitude to the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for their continued support for its charity programme.
