Baveghems is new PNCR MP

Joan Baveghems

People’s National Congress Reform activist Joan Baveghems was, on Monday, 17 December, sworn-in as that party’s newest Member of Parliament, replacing the former shadow finance minister Winston Murray, who died last year.

Baveghems took the oath  of office administered by Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs, before the presentation of the 2011 Budget by Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh.

In a statement issued later, the PNCR said that long-serving party activist Baveghems, of 564 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, has been extracted from the top-up list of the PNCR/1G candidates for the 2006 General and Regional Elections to fill the vacancy created by the death of Murray.

The party said that, as a consequence, it has reassigned the responsibilities of its members of parliament. Volda Lawrence has been appointed as its new shadow minister of finance and economic affairs, while Cheryl Sampson will take over responsibilities for human services, social security and women’s affairs, which were formerly the ambit of Lawrence.

Deputy Speaker Clarissa Riehl will now be the new shadow minister of foreign affairs, while Aubrey Norton will assume responsibilities for housing and water. Keith Scott has been reassigned as shadow minister of tourism, trade and industry, while Ernest Elliot has been given the portfolio of works and communications. Details of the new assignments of PNCR members of parliament will soon be published.

The PNCR also wishes to advise that Deborah Backer will be carrying out the functions of PNCR Chief Whip during the absence of Lance Carberry, who is scheduled to leave Guyana today for medical treatment.
