Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad said Bartica is rapidly developing as one of Guyana’s new tourism hotspots.
He was at the time addressing residents of Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) at the flag-raising ceremony held at the Bartica pavilion to mark Guyana’s 45th independence anniversary, a release from his office said.
Prashad said Bartica is truly one of the most beautiful places in Guyana, and Barticians are ‘genuinely friendly and accommodating people.’
Noting that the tourism sector has made significant progress over the years, he said the government has officially declared Bartica a port of entry in order to facilitate yachting in Guyana. A new building, which houses customs, immigration, and a port health authority was constructed to facilitate yachting. He reminded the gathering that Guyana is also in the Doyle’s Yachting Guide for the first time, with 46 pages dedicated to Guyana.
He said Bartica and Guyana have tremendous potential for yachting, some of the advantages being Guyana is outside of the hurricane belt; has inexpensive labour and land; geographic position is relative to cross-Atlantic crossings; outstanding natural beauty and attractions; emerging eco-tourism destination; and relevant existing skills and services.
The Tourism Ministry, he said, has been working with key stakeholders in the public and private sectors to develop the yachting industry in Guyana, since this industry is one of the fastest growing segments of global tourism.
“Tourism is a rapidly growing phenomenon and has become one of the largest industries in the world,” he stated, adding that its impact is significant since it plays an important and positive role in the socio-economic development in destination countries, for example, offering new employment opportunities and contributing to a broader cultural understanding by respecting the diversity of cultures and ways of life.
Alluding to the annual Bartica Regatta, the tourism minister said the government has been fully supporting and endorsing this event. “We are very happy to be associated with this premier water sport event, which is growing in popularity, participation, quality and competitiveness; and which is also consistently delivering on the fun, relaxation, and entertainment factors for everyone,” he told residents.
Prashad said Regatta is a signature and much-anticipated event, adding that visitors can experience the thrill of the Essequibo River, or enjoy a peaceful atmosphere at any of the nature resorts.
