A 23-day-old baby girl on Wednesday evening perished in a fire of unknown origin at her lot 116 Middle Street, Stewartville, West Coast Demerara home.
The blaze reportedly started about 20: 30h. Alisha Samantha Boodram, who was the first child for her parents, was asleep with her six year old cousin in a room of their one flat house at the time, but the latter managed to escape the inferno.
The baby’s mother, Samantha Boodram said she and her husband went to buy an item for the baby and left the child with her cousin. According to the grieving mother, she was away for about five minutes, and while she and her husband were on their way home, they heard persons screaming “fire!” The woman noted that by the time they reached their house, the entire building was already in flames.
The 18-year-old mother, with tears rolling down her cheeks, said “me tell me husband go in and save me baby, but by the time he kick down the back door, he say fire deh all over”.
Boodram stated that she heard persons had gone to the house and threw something on it, but she does not know how true is the allegation.
Meanwhile, the owner of the house, Kevin Smith said he left the building and when he returned, he heard his house which was built about 15 years ago, was on fire. “Now I will have to start back from scratch,” the man said. He stated that he does not know anything about persons throwing something on the house as his family did not have any issues with anyone around.
The child’s grandmother Noreen Outar said her daughter called her and her husband and told them the baby perished in the house.
Outar noted that on hearing the sad news, she and her husband put on their clothes and rushed to the scene, where the news was confirmed. The family was unable to save any of their belongings.
The house was occupied by the baby, her mother, father, cousin, uncle and aunt.
The Guyana Fire Service arrived about 30 minutes after receiving a report and put out the blaze. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
