Azore comfortable with preparation; confident of victory

Reigning national welterweight champion, Iwan Azore, who is set to take on Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy in the feature fight of the 20th edition of the Friday Night Fights slated for January 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, said he’s comfortable with his training so far and is confident he would lift the CABOFE title.

Azore said he has no complaints about a severe training regime being employed by Coach Carl Franklyn.

He has been in training for three to four hours per day for the past six weeks.

Coach Franklyn said Azore has been very focused, which is the key to winning the title.

The national champion stated that he has no doubts about winning; he described his opponent as indiscipline and so poses no threat in the ring.

“On the 27th I would be the one walking away with the title; Hardy is no match for me,” Azore predicted.

This would be Azore’s fourth Friday Night Fight and the third shot at the CABOFE title. In his professional career, he has won 14 of his 21 fights with four defeats and three draws. Azore has never tasted defeat on the Friday Night Fight card.

At the contract signing ceremony, Azore and Hardy lost their temper and traded punches that resulted in Azore’s upper left eye being burst. According to Azore, the incident did him more good than bad as he is now more focused, angry and hungry to win.

The 29-year old is originally from Linden but moved to Georgetown and joined the Guyana Defence Force, then later became a prison officer. However, his passion for boxing drew him to the sport. His boxing career started in Trinidad and Tobago when he signed a contract with his former Trinidadian manager, Canfley Thompson.

Azore proudly dedicates his success to his family, including his fiancé who have supported him every step of the journey. The national champion sees himself representing Guyana and the Caribbean at world championships in the future.
