Anu Dev, a student of Queen’s College has reportedly topped this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) for Guyana, with 15 grade ones, a top source at the Barbados-based Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has said.
Another student of New Amsterdam Multilateral School also copped 15 subjects, the source added. Dev is the daughter of Ravi Dev the former leader of the now defunct Rise Organise and Rebuild (ROAR) party. Education officials in Guyana said the results will soon be released..
Guyana Times International understands also that QC might have come out on top again. Over the years students of the country’s highest secondary school has been bestowed the region’s most outstanding candidate overall at the exams.
Additionally, this newspaper understands that more than 150 students gained eight subjects and more.
Last year, 16- year-old Saieed Khalil topped the country with 15 grade ones and one grade two. In 2009, Yana-Marisa Edwards, a student also of Queen’s College achieved grade one in 14 subjects and a grade two in one subject.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh has over the years credited the CXC results to government-led interventions that have propelled teachers and students to improve. He believes that students are reading more and the teachers are employing the right methodologies.
Outside of the capital city, outstanding performances were recorded at the Anna Regina Multilateral High School, Abram’s Zuil Secondary School, West Demerara Secondary, Skeldon Line Path, Berbice High School, JC Chandisingh Secondary and at the Mackenzie High School in Linden.
