Another Guyanese icon

Dear Editor,
It is always a great joy, reading about the achievements, recognition etc. of Guyanese, who have left the country a long time back.
The most recent example of this is the case of the Guyanese-Canadian, Dr Budhendranauth Doobay, who was among 60 Canadians honoured by the governor general of Canada, for their contributions to improving community life.
The number ‘60’ is significant – it is now 60 years since Queen Elizabeth ascended to the British throne, and so the Canadian government decided to honour 60 outstanding Canadians, for their sterling work, in various areas. Now to be one of these 60 is truly remarkable, and therefore Dr Doobay must be celebrated.
The selected group received from Governor General David Johnson, Diamond Jubilee medals, the ceremony took place at Rideau Hall, in the country’s capital, Ottawa. This granting of honours to deserving individuals was the Canadian way of celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s achievement. The celebration will culminate in May with grand celebrations in England to celebrate the coronation.
Now back to Dr Doobay – he was the lone Guyanese among the select group. So his selection really says a lot about him. He has done extensive volunteer work in Canada and made immense contributions to immigrant integration into society.
He is also well known in Canada for his charitable work. He has raised millions of dollars to assist various worthwhile non-profit projects. Dr Doobay is the founder of the Voice of Vedas (VOV) Cultural Sabha in Richmond Hill, Toronto.
In Canada, there is a little chorus that emanates from the crowd when something good is done – ‘way to go.’ So to Dr Doobay – it is the same: ‘way to go’ and keep going.
Yours truly,
Dharam Lall
