Another great sporting achievement

Dear Editor,

It may take a long time for Guyana to actually start winning Olympic medals. So far, it is just a boxing bronze, from Michael Parris, and this was way back at the 1980 Olympics. However, the effort to win must not wane.

To this end, Guyana is ‘going the right way.’ There is now a spanking new facility – this is something to be proud of, and it is also a place for top-level training to take place. In other words, sports must not be a mere step-child.

I refer here to the synthetic floor at the National Gymnasium, which has finally been completed, and was commissioned by Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony. This is truly a historic moment for the Guyana Volleyball Federation.

Minister Anthony, in his feature address, told the gathering that the synthetic floor is just one of the many developments that government has been focusing on, adding that he is optimistic that this new synthetic floor will resuscitate Guyana’s volleyball to a position of prominence in the Caribbean.

The sport minister also disclosed that through the Sport Ministry’s policy and plan, a three-to four-year programme will be instituted in both primary and secondary schools, this with the aim of having more persons involved in the sport, both formal and beach volleyball. The plan is awesome, and what makes it so refreshing is that it takes into account the schools in Guyana.

Editor, this synthetic floor of the National Gymnasium is state-of-theart, costing went up to approximately Gy$5.5 million.

So now, I guess it is time to capitalise. I do commend the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry. I hope that the zeal never wanes.

Yours truly,

Ramesh Pertab
