Several Guyanese residing in the Washington Metropolitan Area in the United States have presented awards of appreciation to Guyana’s ambassador to the U.S., Bayney Karran, and his wife Donna Karran.Guyana's ambassador to the U.S. , Bayney Karran

The presentations were done last Saturday at the embassy in the U.S. capital, Washington D.C.

Joy Ford Austin told Guyana Times International that she and a few friends — Paul Tennassee, Pat Bone, Errol Arthur, Dennis Wiggins and Sarojini Ford —  recognizing the continued efforts the ambassador and his wife are making to foster greater cohesion among the Guyanese community in Washington D.C., decided to show their appreciation to the ambassador and his wife.

“We feel we have a relationship with the community, Guyana and the ambassador just by the way he welcomes us with the kind of warmth and openness. They both have helped us strengthen our connection to our homeland,” she said.

Following receipt of the award, the ambassador said he did not consider what he and his wife had done as anything out of the ordinary. “It is my role to propagate Guyanese culture in the diaspora, to be an agent of inclusiveness within the community, and to facilitate socializing among members,” he declared.

And he feels progress has been made in that direction if there is greater togetherness among the community.

He offered praise to the Guyanese diaspora, describing the support of the community as the strength of the embassy. “In the wider community, there is a willingness to support the embassy’s activities and associate with each other. Therefore, while I appreciate the award, it is not about us, but the community; and I hope that members of the community continue to grow from strength to strength in this area and elsewhere in the United States.”

Karran was appointed ambassador of Guyana to the United States in December 2003, and has also served as Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS).
