Alika Morgan deserves that helping hand

Dear Editor,
If it happens, I will celebrate with her and her coach. I am talking here about the word that I got regarding celebrated long distance runner, Alika Morgan. Her coach, Leslie Black revealed that he is in negotiations with two U. S. colleges for a scholarship for the runner.
Currently she is preparing for the CSEC exams in January. According to Black, Essex College and Linden Wood University have shown interest in Morgan. The coach further explained that Linden Wood is currently assessing Morgan’s records. She is 21 and is seeking to combine athletics and academics. The prodigy is preparing to write Mathematics and English at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) in January. Her preparations are quite private so as to accommodate her fulltime athletic career. I think that this is so commendable.
I know of many local sporting heroes who have to take on a ‘camera/ microphone shy’ personality all because they do grave harm to average intelligence, simple language and basic speech. I am serious in this too.
Morgan herself opined that her dream is to study and run at the same time. The best way to achieve this is via a scholarship. If one can be landed in the United States, that would be great. The facilities are there. However, if some kind of arrangement can be made locally for her, she should settle for it.
I think that Guyana is kind of lagging when it comes to helping athletes launch their careers. She is mostly focusing on 5K races now since she is comfortable with them.
While in the U. S. Morgan copped three victories in three charity 5K races. I remember seeing Morgan for the first time and how promising she was. Back then, there were talks about keeping her away from the ‘very long’ races since she was so young. I am not the expert in this area, but I have enough sense to know that this lass is good material. She has a great work ethic and her coach has that extra concern for his charges. I just pray that something be landed. I also say to the runner that come what may, stick with some academics.
Yours truly,
Denesh Ramsawack
