Ali unveils Georgetown beautification plan

Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Irfaan Ali recently met with members of the business community to unveil his “Urban Beautification Plan” for a section of the city.
The move was a follow through of an announcement made by Ali to clean up the city with the aim to attract more visitors to Guyana.
Minister Ali stressed the importance of partnership between the Tourism Ministry and the private sector, noting that great things can be accomplished.
“We have been successful in transforming the area on Brickdam, now known as Parliament Square. This was made possible through collaboration with the private sector, and forms part of the wider “Brickdam Renewal Plan”,” he explained.
Speaking on the beautification project, the minister said: “This is an excellent opportunity for us to come together and take action. There is no denying of the benefits of a beautification project. In Chile for example, a depressed area was transformed with a coat of paint and some flowers; this uplifted an entire area.”
The minister said the beautification plan includes the construction of a waterfall in front of the ministry’s South Road office, and a paved walkway for pedestrians there.

He called on the members of the business community to support the initiative, pointing out that he is hoping that the plan will come to fruition.
“This is the first of many meetings we plan to engage in, as we seek to garner feedback from all stakeholders and to form partnerships,” the Tourism Minister said.
He said the Donald Ramotar administration remains committed to restoring Georgetown to a state all would be proud of.
Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Director Indranauth Haralsingh, speaking directly to members of the private sector said: “This is a pilot initiative and we want to partner with you to do this.”
Mayor Hamilton Green lauded the minister for the initiative, and expressed hope that the project will become a catalyst for similar activities across the country.
The participants of the consultation were provided with the details of the project and the scope of works to be undertaken. The areas targeted for the enhancement include Camp Street – from Regent Street to Brickdam and along South Road – and Camp Street to Wellington Street.
