A man was sentenced on Monday by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for assaulting and wounding his wife.

Mark Sadoo, 27, a cart owner of Albouystown, Georgetown, made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charges of unlawful wounding and common assault. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge, which stated that on March 2 in Albouystown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded the virtual complainant (VC), Tejwattie Beepat.

He also pleaded guilty to the other charge, which stated that on March 3 in Albouystown, he unlawfully assaulted the VC. Prosecutor Lionel Harvey stated that the VC and the defendant are reputed husband and wife, living together. On the days in question, as a result of a misunderstanding, the defendant dealt the VC a lash after which he then dealt her several cuffs about her body causing her to receive injuries to her temple.

The matter was reported and the VC sought medical attention. The defendant was arrested and later charged.

Sadoo was unrepresented and told the court that on the day in question he went home to find the VC having sexual intercourse with another man. He said “I jus flip when I see that ma’am… she bring this man in me house, sexing on me bed, without a condom on”. The magistrate in her ruling took all the aggravating and mitigating factors into consideration, and sentenced the defendant to twelve months imprisonment for the wounding charge and three months for the assault charge.
