AFC will remain an independent party – Ramjattan

The Alliance for Change (AFC) will remain an independent party, according to its leader Khemraj Ramjattan, as he responded to coalition questions posed by Guyana Times International.

“At times, AFC’s views will be identical to the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and we will support initiatives of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) if we share the same view, but we will remain independent,” he explained during a telephone interview on Saturday with this newspaper.
Ramjattan’s comments come on the heels of recent calls by the APNU for post-election coalition. Last Wednesday, APNU Member of Parliament Basil Williams advocated for constitutional reforms which will pave the way for post-election coalitions in the future.
Williams was quoted as saying that a single constitutional change before the last election would have crystallised the PPP/C’s position. If the Constitution had a provision for post-elections coalition to yield up a president, that one seat would have given the APNU-AFC the presidency.
