Accused church robber remanded

John Headley, of 58 De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara, was brought before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court One on Tuesday, charged with breaking and entering the Wesleyan Church at Charlotte Street, Bourda.

According to prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar, on Friday, March 18, the accused broke into the church at approximately 08:45 hours. A security guard caught the accused in the act of theft, and raised an alarm. The police were summoned, and upon their arrival, they found the accused with a quantity of clothing and other personal belongings, all property of Eldon Andrews. Headley was cautioned and arrested.

In her objection to bail, the prosecutor told the court that the accused has similar matters pending in court.

The unrepresented, dishevelled man tried to explain to the magistrate that he was sick and in need of special attention, and even asked attorney Gordon Gilhuys, who was present in court, to speak to the court on his behalf. The accused then gave the court the impression that he was suffering from diarrhea, and lay on the floor of the prisoners’ box.

The magistrate adjourned court to give the orderlies enough time to get the prisoner to the washroom. The prosecutor maintained her objection to bail, saying the accused had given the police an incorrect address.

When the afternoon session resumed, the defendant’s case was recalled, and the acting chief magistrate remanded him to prison until April 6.
