The dead man, Sam Lall, aka “Samo” or “Allen”

Seven years of an abusive relationship ended tragically for a Mon Repos couple early Tuesday morning. According to reports, 21-year-old seaman Sam Lall, also called “Samo” or “Alien”, of Block 8, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was allegedly stabbed to death by his 25-year-old common-law wife, Villda Beaton, also known as Priya.
Beaton’s sobbing mother, Rita Pritilal, told this publication that the couple was always in the habit of fighting. The tearful woman related that sometime around 05: 30 on Tuesday, she received a telephone call from her daughter instructing her to summon a taxi because “Samo was injured”. Pritilal, who resides mere minutes away from the couple, upon reaching her daughter’s home noticed that Lall was braced against the front door of the house, bleeding profusely.
The bleeding Lall was placed in a taxi and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The mother claimed that her daughter was not capable of killing Samo, since he was the abuser.
According to the woman, just last week Samo hammered her daughter mercilessly. She claimed too that last month the man also stabbed her daughter in her leg. Pritilal said despite his abusive conduct, her daughter refused to end the relationship. The union produced three children who are all minors.
A neighbour, Paltooram Jaipaul, added that he was awakened by screams from Priya that “Samo was hurt and he should come and see”.
Jaipaul immediately rushed over to the couple’s house. That was when he saw Samo covered in blood, apparently unconscious. When he inquired from Priya what had happened, Jaipaul said she replied, ‘“Uncle Jaio, meh had to bore he with de knife; meh nah able no more with this.’”
This newspaper also spoke with the deceased’s mother, Jasmattie Lall, who said the last time she saw her son alive was 0: 02h on Tuesday when he left a cousin’s house to go home. “Me and he left he cousin house and he tell meh, ‘Mommy, meh going and get de bag from house to go back to work. Samo was suppose to join his step-father to travel out to sea at 0: 06 am Tuesday and look what gone and happen to he now,” cried the mother.
Lall’s stepfather, Khemchand Persaud told reporters that after the family arrived at the hospital, he saw Samo lying on a bed in the emergency operation room with what appeared to be a stab wound to the lower left chest. He was motionless. Persaud later learnt that Lall was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
“I saw she (Priya) sitting at a desk in the emergency room giving doctors information but she nah talk to we. The thing what hurt meh de most is that she face was dry like she deliberately kill Samo.”
The angry man went on to relate that the deceased was very helpful and loving to his sickly mother. “Samo”, according to him, “did not go far in school”, hence he worked most of his life as a fisherman on the Sir Narvin fishing vessel.
During this newspaper’s visit to the community, the family of the deceased was busy preparing for his wake. According to police sources on the East Coast, Beaton was taken into custody at the East La Penitence Station and an investigation was launched.
