A very wise move – others should follow

Dear Editor,

What a relief! The Bank of Baroda Guyana Incorporation, responded to the calls from the business community, on the East Coast of Demerara, and now, after some wait, it has happened – There is a spanking new Gy$ 50 million sub-branch, at Lot 30 Tract ‘A’ Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.

Right off the bat – Mon Repos is a very busy spot in Guyana. So the move for the bank’s branch is most welcomed. Still, in Guyana, when it comes to monetary transaction, there is a kind of fear, and not having to go to and from Georgetown, this fear is greatly minimised. The second good thing here is that Bank of Baroda will be operating on Saturdays. This kind of thing is so long overdue. Many people are employed over the traditional five working days, and only on Saturday, they can do their banking business. So to cater for them, is quite a good and prudent consideration. I hope that other banks will follow. This may hopefully lead to a system, where there is a late night operation.

Many Guyanese find it difficult to get time off, to beat the mid-afternoon ‘closed to the public’ system in current use. One late afternoon will help them a lot. It is the same mid-afternoon ‘closed to the public’ that most insurance companies use. This too must be addressed. All over the world, banks have a system to accommodate the regular ‘office hour (eight to four, or nine to five)’ people. (So modify this, as you can please).

It must be noted, that this bank responded because of the recognition that vast developments were taking place, on the East Coast of Demerara. In Guyana, many once under-populated areas are now major centres of commerce. I think here of the New Diamond Housing Scheme (maybe a town soon?). So services must be extended to these areas. Not being overly optimistic, I hope, but I think that this will make Guyana so much more appealing and comfortable.

Yours truly,

Jenny Shakoor
