A little bit more for golfing please

Dear Editor,

It is always very refreshing to read about local golf.

In Guyana, there is just one single course – at Lusignan – but it is the perfect setting for tranquillity, even while a furious course battle is taking place. An example of this was evident over the Easter weekend.

This was when, the veteran, Patrick Prashad, flourished over the back nine, to record victory. It was the Woodlands Hospital Golf tournament, and it produced some great moments.

Prashad, after a disastrous front nine of 42, shot a stunning 33 on the back, and this included an eagle and two birdies. This gave him the day’s best gross of 75 and best net of 68. Put it this way – it made him ‘champ’ for the tournament.

In second place was the club’s president, Brian Hackett, who shot 95 for a net of 68, while third spot went to Mikey Mangal, with a 78, net 69. These three players stood out from a field of twenty nine golfers.

Club Member Hilbert Shields was the man who was instrumental in gaining the hospital’s sponsorship.

He however was thankful to his friend, Billy Fung-a-Fatt, who is likely to ensure an annual tournament. As we all know, golfing in Guyana does not bring in money, but it costs a lot. So sponsorship is quite vital.

For those people who have never visited the Lusignan Golf Course, it is time they did. The scene is most halcyonic. It has that restorative ambience, and it is something the tourism sector should think about. This is because many tourists travel with their golfing paraphernalia.

They would love to play a round of golf. All that the Ministry of Tourism has to do is make sure that the access road be in good driving condition. Currently it is not car-friendly.

I can hardly wait for the next tournament. So I ask for some better PR work and more coverage. I like when the anticipation is built up.

Yours truly,

Raj Baijoo
