A breezy visit to Number 63 Beach

No. 63 Beach

The Number 63 Beach is said to be the Caribbean’s longest stretch of beach with a unique surface on which vehicles can easily drive. Located in the vicinity of Corriverton (at the mouth of the Corentyne River) and deemed the most popular beach in Berbice, Number 63 is a prized spot in the country. On Sundays, locals gather at the beach, turning it into a parking lot with their vehicles while they set up tents nearby and unpack coolers of beer, food and beach- cricket gear to pass the day leisurely.

Some may venture into the water for a swim, but most just lounge and bask in the cool comfort of their tents on the sand.

Donkey carts still pass along with refreshments for those without any, however. Villagers from surrounding villages also come out to enjoy horseback rides along the beach, as fisher men haul their catch of the day and throw fishing seines far out into the river.

The Ministry of Tourism recently revamped the beach with benabs and changing rooms to make it more accommodating to visitors. The beach is mostly crowded on Easter day as persons fly their kites, swim, eat, party, and generally have a great day on the beach.

The new Berbice River Bridge now makes it much easier to get to Corentyne and ultimately to the beach. So head there this weekend for a unique holiday. (Taken from Guyana Times Sunday Magazine)
