Guyanese shine at Inter-Guianas Cultural Festival

Some of the designer pieces on display

Guyanese designers were given stellar reviews at the recently-concluded Inter-Guianas Cultural Festival held in Suriname last weekend.

The event saw designers showcasing their pieces made of various natural materials, including shells, dye and other materials.

Guyana Times International caught up with one of the designers, Zarinah Hameed- Pyle, who reported that the experience was splendid and extraordinary.

Hameed-Pyle said that despite some challenges, the Guyanese delegation was able to put up an excellent show.

The Guyanese delegation comprised talented persons in the culinary, performing arts, visual and fashion areas. The fashion show was on Saturday evening, August 27.

It created a kaleidoscope on stage with designs displayed by designers from the three Guianas. The outstanding Guyanese designs captured the essence of the Guyanese people.

Hameed-Pyle, first runner-up at the 2009 Guyana Fashion Weekend, said her “Azariah” designs, which focused on “Natural Mystic”, were well received.

She used a myriad of techniques to create the eye-catching pieces, including fabric painting and using lots of coconut shells in various ways.

The young designer said she was happy to participate in the Inter-Guianas Cultural Festival, and was thankful to the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry for giving her the opportunity to be a part of the event.

“As soon as I got the invitation, I thought that it would be a time to promote myself as a designer and showcase Guyana’s talent,” she said. Hameed-Pyle said she had a passion for fashion from an early age, but never pursued it until her family persuaded her to start designing clothing.

She declared that the experience has given her more self- confidence to move to another level in the near future.

Carol Fraser, Sister Volda, Helena Dremner, H& E Collection, Jennifer Gibson and Abiola Garraway were the other designers.
