– Government Technical Institute (GTI) drubs Wismar/ Christianburg 5-3 to grab inaugural Digicel Schools’ Football title

Red and silver confetti covered the players of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) after winning the first ever Digicel Schools’ Football championships title last night at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground with a convincing 5-3 victory against Linden powerhouses Wismar/ Christianburg Multilateral.
GTI was piloted by their prolific striker Jermaine Junior, who broke the score-line in the 20th minute for his 23rd goal of the tournament, to give his team the early advantage. The mining town challengers would not be left behind and on the ensuing run-down; Clarence Huggins scored the equaliser for Wismar/ Christianburg.
After Huggins’ prompt answer, GTI rose to the challenge and Darren Peters sent their reply past the Wismar/ Christianburg custodian to the back of the net just two minutes later.
GTI retained the lead and held it until the end of the first half before they began the scoring frenzy in the second half.
Six minutes into the second period, Darrol Fraser continued what his team had left off in the first half and scored his first goal to put his team ahead, 4-2.
GTI’s two-goal cushion was reduced as Wismar/ Christianburg showed once again that they were determined to compete on the big stage. Trenton Lashley, who netted a double for the Upper Demerara team, cashed in on his first strike in the 57th minute to bring his team a bit closer to GTI (3-4).
But GTI’s hungry strikers were not contented with a one-goal advantage and Keifer Adams gave them the ‘safety net’ goal in the 64th minute. Wismar/ Christianburg may not have had a sufficient balance to reply and GTI was able to push ahead yet again. Darren Peters, who scored GTI’s second goal, sank his second of the match in the 88th, to propel GTI to a 5-2 lead before Lashley completed his double for Wismar/ Christianburg moments later.
Junior’s remarkable finishing earned him the award for most goals scored in the competition (23 goals) and he was also the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Yannick Simmons from Wismar/ Christianburg won the Best Goalkeeper award. Junior, who along GTI’s captain Eon Alleyne plays for Fruta Conquerors, said the confidence of playing for a club team was definitely an asset in the competition.
Alleyne and Junior, both 18, have once again been selected by coach Gordon Braithwaite to compete at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) football tournament which will be held in Suriname in October.
New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) managed to pull off a stunning win against Waramadong for third place in a thrilling encounter that had to be decided by penalty kicks.
The scores were dead even at 4-4 at the end of regulation, but NA TI managed to prevail 2-1 in the penalty kicks.
Leroy James (38th & 48th), Alaska Burnett (10th) and Ron Lyken (81st) were the ‘net- rockers’ for NA TI, while Arnon Fredericks (12th), Alwayne Francis (39th), Mc Cord Kramer (42nd) and Derwin Percy (86th) got on the scorecard for Waramodong. Percy’s strike in the 86th was the goal of the day under the most critical circumstances. Percy, who has also been selected to the IGG squad, took a short corner kick and then found a precise angle and fired one past the keeper from just a few feet away from the right corner.
Waramodong did not go home empty handed as they were awarded the Most Disciplined Team trophy.
