Guyana is blessed with an abundance of majestic coconut trees, and their coconuts’ uses are vast and varied over millennia; popularly known for their beautifying properties.

The oldest fossils known of the modern coconut date from what is known as  the Eocene period of Earth’s history, which dates from around 37 to 55 million years ago, and were found in Australia and India.

The coconut tree is a member of the palm family, and the coconuts are commonly used in arts and crafts, foods, medicines, oils, condiments and for religious purposes.

Knowing the benefits of coconuts, U.S.-based Guyanese D’Arcy George and her mother, a medical scientist, founded their business, Crazy4Coconut, in July 2013.

In an interview with  Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, D’Arcy George revealed that the company initially focused on hair products, but this soon developed into a line of body products.

“Crazy4Coconut was born after searching for coconut oil that was indeed organic, without the high smell. Our coconut oil comes from organic coconut trees. We grow them ourselves. Crazy4Coconut’s origin can be found in our backyard in Guyana,” she explained.

The company also started after much prodding from George’s friends. George wanted coconut oil for her hair but did not want the high coconut smell. She then asked her mother to make some for her. When George’s friends tried some they were amazed how beneficial the oil was for their hair and encouraged her to invest more into the business.

All the ingredients in George’s products are natural. She only uses essential oils and not fragrance oils. The reason is that essential oils are produced from flowers or plants while fragrance oils are manmade.

As for the recipes, George does in-depth research on the ingredients and the benefits for hair and body. She also consults with her mother.

“Then I whip my coconut oil and get to work. When I knew I wanted to start making sugar scrubs, I researched the best natural ingredient then clarified with my mother. Scrubs can be made with sugar, salt and Epsom salt, but sugar is the best because it is less abrasive and can be used both on the body and face,” she disclosed.

Crazy4Coconut also offers a line of scrubs made from sugars and butters, made in turn from coconut oil. One of George’s most popular products is the Coconut & Clove oil. It has a mixture of a light smell along with a hint of clove. It helps with hair growth and can also be used as a dandruff treatment.

“This clove oil is also antiseptic and a very strong antioxidant. Clove oil is one of the strongest natural antioxidants ever tested. It can increase blood circulation, which makes it one of the best supports for hair growth stimulation. The sugar scrubs are made with raw cane sugar and leave hands, face and feet smooth and moisturized. It exfoliates, breaks down scar tissue beneath the skin and traps moisture in so skin stays hydrated all day,” she noted.

George also uses jasmine oil which is known for its sensual floral fragrance and is used on skin to help soothe and moisturize. According to George, jasmine oil along with coconut oil has proven to be very effective when it comes to hair growth. Along with adding volume and length it gives dry hair a radiant shine.

“My main objective is to include coconut oil in all of my products as well as using all natural products. My mom and I currently sell the products online on our website and Facebook. My future plans for Crazy4Coconut is to have an internationally certified product as well as customers globally,” she outlined.

George also mentioned she is happy when she reads the overwhelming positive reviews of her products and this motivates her to keep on developing her business. She now has a long list of clientele who speak excitedly of the benefits enjoyed using Crazy4Coconut’s natural products.
