22-year-old dancer is Guyana’s latest suicide victim

…three more hospitalised after attempting suicide

Twenty-two-year-old, Dinesh Chan aka Moti of Reliance Village on the Essequibo Coast, succumbed last Sunday night at the Suddie Public Hospital after he consumed a quantity of poisonous substance in an effort to end his life.

Chan, who is an electrician, was discovered by family relatives at his Reliance home. He battled for his life for 5 days then succumbed to his injuries.

According to information reaching this newspaper, Chan was confused over a prolonged relationship issue. Although he is a well known electrician and a dancer he never confided in anyone.

His sudden death has plunged his home village and the Swarswattie Dance Academy into deep mourning. He was a dancer for almost two years with the Academy. The Academy members described him as a very willing and co-operative person.

Meanwhile, three other young persons from the Pomeroon River are battling for their lives at the Charity Hospital after they also attempted suicide. The three persons are also said to be suffering from relationship issues.

This publication understands that doctors at the Charity Hospital are monitoring their condition.

Only recently 5 persons were hospitalised at the Suddie Public Hospital. Three of those persons have died while two survived.

Thus far, Region Two has recorded the highest rate of suicide in the country with more than 6 reported deaths for 2016.
