Eating their words

Backtracking But it’s not only vomit you might see in Parliament – expect some more nasty motions. All over the floor. But the poor Chief Justice, will have to clean all of these up. Their effect are all the same – misguided. Take the same ‘gag’ motion that the Speaker has referred to the Committee of Privileges.  For now, the Court has ruled that the Speaker has the right to do this. But let’s see what happens if that committee tries to ‘gag’ Rohee. The court will of course throw…

Disarray in opposition

Schizophrenic The opposition is in a state of complete disarray. We could start with the stinging defeats they suffered at the hands of the Attorney General. For a group that’s jam-packed with lawyers, you’d think they’d do better in legal matters. But this is exactly the area that’s been their Waterloo – with the court’s ruling they were wrong to chop the budget, to stifle constitutional offices, and now to ‘gag’ Rohee. You have to worry about their legal bona-fides. But their problem lies deeper and their gross legal ineptitude…

Opposition should not see its role as policy formulation

Dear Editor, The court recently dismissed the opposition’s challenge to government’s deposit of monies into the Lotto Fund. I have this distinct feeling that the combined opposition knows it cannot win certain legal arguments, but goes ahead with all kinds of challenges, using its one-seat majority for mere procrastination and tomfoolery. This particular matter has now come to an end as the court dismissed the legal challenge filed by A Partnership National Unity Member of Parliament Desmond Trotman. The respondent of course was Attorney General Anil Nandlall. Trotman should have…

The news of her passing came to me and the organisation with deep shock and a void is now being felt with profound sadness. Ismay was born in Barbados on December 27, 1900 to Bajan parents. Her father, Livingston, died before she…

Field trips

“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child” – George Santayana I’m pretty sure that everyone who’s gone to school has gone on at least one field trip during their school life. At least I hope so. And I’m equally sure that some of your most exciting memories are probably the ones about the field trips. And that’s to be expected, isn’t it? Who doesn’t relish the chance to get out of those dusty, old classrooms? I’m not going to dwell on the droning voices!! And it’s definitely…
