Welcoming another batch of Chinese doctors

Dear Editor, Medicare in Guyana has come in for quite a beating recently. So I really welcome the news that another batch of Chinese doctors are in the country to offer much needed help to the country’s health care system. History shows that Chinese doctors have always been supportive, making difficult and complex surgeries a reality in Guyana. The time extends all the way to almost two decades of service, and this via the aegis of the Chinese medical brigade. I am very certain that many would greatly benefit from…

The Tipperary Hall is up and functioning – kudos for those involved

Dear Editor, Every time I read about the Tipperary Hall, I get very sentimental. As a boy, every weekend, the wind blew the sound of this hall into my ear. The volume and clarity used to fluctuate with the wind, but the pleasure remained constant. Mostly it was the sound of soft music, and I used to envisage the quiet dancing. So I take a piece of the ‘meal of sentiments’ from President Donald Ramotar, who made reference to the fact that the PPP/C and Buxtonians are inseparable. The occasion…

The president has again given a commitment, now it’s up to the opposition to act responsibly

I can only hope that those from the opposition benches in Parliament and civil society as a whole pay attention to what he was saying. I sincerely believe that irrespective of the circumstances, President Ramotar truly wants to engage all political parties in the task of nation building. He knows full well that considering the results of the…

TIP Catch-22

The US just issued its 2012 report on “Trafficking in Persons” (TIP) and it is certain to raise the hackles of Guyanese officialdom once again. A Tier Two ranking means a country’s government does not fully comply with the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act’s minimum standards, but is making significant efforts to bring itself into compliance with those standards. Just before the release of this report, the Minister…
