The ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/ C) has called on all “patriotic Guyanese” to reject “purveyors of division”, and to support attempts being made to attain political consensus. The party said in a statement released Monday night that the progress being made in these talks with the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) was being opposed by a “vocal minority” which tends to pay lip service to the need for political consensus. “Amongst this vocal minority are sections of the media (re: Stabroek News’ editorial of April 23, 2012)”,…

Read MoreA little bit more for golfing please
Dear Editor, It is always very refreshing to read about local golf. In Guyana, there is just one single course – at Lusignan – but it is the perfect setting for tranquillity, even while a furious course battle is taking place. An example of this was evident over the Easter weekend. This was when, the veteran, Patrick Prashad, flourished over the back nine, to record victory. It was the Woodlands Hospital Golf tournament, and it produced some great moments. Prashad, after a disastrous front nine of 42, shot a stunning…
Read MoreThe move by the Guyana government regarding cricket should be applauded
Dear Editor, I applaud the move made by Attorney General Anil Nandlall, through lawyers for the government, issuing a 21-day ultimatum, to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). The ultimatum implores that all records, relating to the failed Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), be rectified, to reflect the interest of Guyana. Right at the onset, I categorically announce that this is the way to go. Already, Jamaica and Trinidad are following in this vein. The local and regional cricket boards must be held accountable. For too long, these offices have been…
Read MoreTeachers’ performances should match the salaries and benefits they demand
Dear Editor, I am encouraged by the fact that President Donald Ramotar took time off his busy schedule to attend the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Third Biennial Delegates Conference in Berbice. No doubt the union and by extension, teachers across the country would have felt a sense of comfort and solidarity that indeed the government does care about their welfare. At the conference, the president assured the delegates that the government is committed to fulfilling the teachers’ multi-year package and to fixing the glitches that have dogged the process. The…
Read MorePolitical Axe Murderers
Quislings Over the years, axe murderers have gained considerable notoriety because of the absolute gruesomeness of their bloody goings-on. It’s spawned a whole genre of horror films. The mindlessness of the perpetrators – evident in the wild lopping off of heads and eviscerations of guts – just leave the horrified spectator agape. That’s the identical reaction of many to the wild chops the combined opposition have now proposed to the budget. They make axe murderers look like choir boys. Where is the rhyme and reason for some of these chops…

Read MoreProvocation of confrontation
In this very delicate period of our nation’s history, as the parties in the National Assembly manoeuvre through the ‘new dispensation’, there are forces determined to provoke only confrontation. They have defined the present alignment in starkly Manichean terms: the forces of good (the opposition) arrayed against the force (in this case, singular) of evil (the PPP executive). Under such a narrative, of course, there can only be one salutary, and indeed moral, outcome – the complete defeat and rout, if not extermination, of the ‘evil’ PPP executive government. The…
