Read MoreThe CNS Channel Six suspension
Dear Editor, In many ways, I am quite happy that President Jagdeo made an amendment to the ban imposed on CNS Channel Six. The suspended sentence will not reduce the severity of Mr Sharma’s blunder, but it will quell the negative and complaining voices of all those who were saying that the ban was a political move from the PPP/C quarters. President Bharrat Jagdeo explained that his action was taken to “take away any excuse they (opposition members) have to create violence and enmity, or to boycott the elections.” This…
Read MoreJoseph Hamilton is an example of how people should behave when they have convictions about issues
Dear Editor, I commend former senior PNCR member, Joseph Hamilton, for being “big” enough to follow his heart. I think he is an example of how people should behave when they have convictions about issues. Also, it shows that it is never too late to change. Too many times, people suffer because of pride, and also because they think that they would be criticised. The same holds true for religious beliefs too. Some people think it is a crime to “switch”, even though when asked why they believe in a…
Read MoreHouses and more houses
Dear Editor, Sometimes, I just have to read and then do a re- read, and even stop in the process. This happened as I was reading and assimilating the details from the article “At keys handing over/ Plans announced for extensive West Bank Demerara housing.” I was most pleasantly surprised and extremely happy for the residents. Most people view owning a home as the ‘ultimate’, and this ‘ultimate’ was achieved just recently on the East Coast Demerara. According to the news items, 38 persons “… now have places to call…
Read MoreGood for the people of Bartica and surrounding areas
Dear Editor, I was happy to learn, through your newspaper, that the people of Bartica benefited from a medical outreach programme in which surgeries were performed on patients in the area. This is extremely good, and will contribute towards improving the health of residents in Bartica and surrounding areas. This Medical Outreach (October 2 to 8 ) was coordinated by the Health Ministry and the Bartica District Hospital. It was an excellent move, as it brought patients from remote areas into focus. These people would now be able to receive…

U.S. Ambassador Brent Hardt, in meeting two Guyanese women activists, Mignon Bowen and Simone Morris-Ramlall, on Thursday, October 6, emphasised that the American State Department considers a priority foreign policy issues and activities relating to the political, economic, and social advancement of women. These two women were selected by the United States Embassy to participate in international visitor programmes in mid-October – one on breast cancer awareness and outreach, and the other on women’s leadership and political participation. Bowen is chairperson of the Avon Community Help Fund established in 2005…
Read MoreFor peaceful elections
In the past few days, there have been disturbing signs that the elections fever may be heating up to a pitch that may cause our fragile democratic peace to be challenged. We refer specifically to the defacement of posters of the PPP/C, in which its presidential candidate, Donald Ramotar, was literally “defaced”. We refer also to the disruption of a meeting of the PPP/C on the East Coast Demerara by members of an opposition party who were egged on by an executive member of that party. We have no wish…
Read MoreGy$10M pledged for revolving fund for private cane farmers
Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud has pledged a whopping Gy$10 million to develop a revolving fund to assist small, private cane farmers. Persaud made this promise when he met with cane farmers on Monday, to discuss ways to further enhance cane farming in Guyana. He said private cane farming is a viable enterprise, noting that the industry will become more profitable, given the trend on the international market. “Today there is increased competition and in fact increased competition for land for private cane farmers” he stated. Government he said has other…
Read MoreGuyana govt in support of setting up local DEA office
By Ariana Gordon The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) presidential candidate Donald Ramotar said he has no objections to the setting up of a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) office locally should he be elected president. In an interview with Guyana Times International on Tuesday, Ramotar said international cooperation is important in fighting illicit activities. “Oh sure, we have said that before, and we are ready to repeat that again,” he said when questioned about the opening of a DEA office in Guyana. The DEA is a United States Department of Justice…
