Ganja bust duo remanded to prison

Two persons, one a clerk attached to the John Fernandes Wharf, were on Monday, June 21, charged in connection with the large ganja bust at the city port last week. Authorities had intercepted some 393.5kg of compressed cannabis in a container at the wharf last Thursday, June 17. Leyland Nichols and labourer George Burrowes were remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry when they appeared before her at that Georgetown magistrate’s court. Amerindian communities countrywide will benefit from the distribution of Gy$63 million in school uniforms, beginning next week. The uniforms will be distributed to the hinterland communities of Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine. Some 30,000 students from about 280 schools at the nursery, primary and secondary levels will benefit from this initiative. The Pomeroon Women’s Agro Processors Association (PWAPA) of Guyana has been adjudged winner of the first place at this year’s Regional Contest for Rural Innovative Projects. Guyana could miss MDG target owing to midwives’ shortage – UN study

Guyana is among 38 countries that could miss the fifth Millennium Development Goal target if it does not train more midwives, a new report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and partners has found. The report said that 38 of 58 countries surveyed during the study could miss their MDG target to achieve 95 per cent coverage of births by skilled attendants by 2015 without a total of 112,000 more midwives. Local timber giant Barama Company Limited (BCL) has officially announced that it is back in plywood manufacturing after nine months of closure due to the damaged boiler at its Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara plant.
